Start this Ho Chi Minh City walk at the Central Post Office, then follow Dong Khoi toward the Opera House and Nguyen Hue. It is a manageable introduction to the city’s older architecture and busy modern streets. At the Post Office, look up at the vaulted interior if visitor access is open, then take a look at nearby Notre-Dame Cathedral from outside. Check current access locally rather than counting on entering the cathedral.
Follow Dong Khoi toward the Opera House
Take your time along Dong Khoi instead of hurrying from one map pin to the next. The appeal is the mix of older facades, hotels, shopfronts and city traffic. Pause outside the Saigon Opera House to see its decorated entrance. A look at the exterior and a visit inside are different experiences: if you want to see a performance, check the current programme and buy the relevant ticket.
Finish on Nguyen Hue Walking Street
Continue to Nguyen Hue for a wider, more open stretch of the centre. This is a good place to slow down, find a drink and decide whether you want to continue toward the river. Despite the name, you will still encounter roads and crossings around the pedestrian area. Ben Thanh Market is an optional extra, not an essential detour; save it for another outing if the heat is catching up with you.
Leave room for a proper break
Choose an early start or a late-afternoon walk if you find midday heat tiring. Wear comfortable shoes, use marked crossings and keep enough flexibility to stop for a seated drink. Pavements can be uneven or busy, so a short route may take longer than the map suggests. If someone in your group needs a break, finish there.
