Set up your phone for Vietnam before you lose signal
Prepare offline maps, saved addresses, tickets and recovery information before traveling in Vietnam, and understand what downloaded Google Maps cannot do.

Before traveling in Vietnam, download the map areas you need and save essential addresses, tickets and booking details separately. A saved map pin is not the same as a downloaded map, and an offline map is not a substitute for every online navigation feature.
Download the area, then test it
Google Maps’ official offline guide explains how to select and download an area through the app’s offline maps controls. Availability can depend on the location and app environment, so check that the download completes on your device.
Google states that offline walking, cycling and public-transport directions are unavailable. Offline driving also lacks live traffic and alternative-route information. Do not promise yourself an offline walking itinerary simply because the streets appear on the screen.

Save a small arrival folder
| Item | What to keep available |
|---|---|
| Accommodation | Exact address, location pin and contact details |
| First transfer | Booking reference and meeting instructions |
| Onward ticket | Confirmation and the operator’s accepted ticket format |
| Important contacts | A method that does not depend on one logged-in app |
| Personal documents | Secure backups with appropriate access controls |
Use descriptive filenames or a clear folder name. “Hotel Hanoi first three nights” is more useful under pressure than several unnamed screenshots.
Test the setup without connectivity
Temporarily disconnect from mobile data and Wi-Fi, then try opening the information you expect to use. This is a practical test of your own setup, not a guarantee that every app will behave the same after an update.
Check that files are actually stored locally rather than only represented by a cloud thumbnail. For a ticket, follow the operator’s current requirements; a screenshot may not be an accepted replacement for its specified format.

Keep recovery separate from the device
If the phone is lost or stops working, consider how you will contact your accommodation, access an important booking or secure an account. Keep essential recovery information in a separate, appropriately protected place. Do not store passwords and unrestricted document copies together in an easily accessible public folder.
Charge the phone before a transfer and confirm the carrier’s current rules for any power bank you intend to carry. This guide does not establish airline battery regulations.
Do saved places download the map? Not by themselves. Use the app’s offline download function and confirm the result.
Can offline maps replace a SIM? They cover only part of the need. Messages, live ride booking and current information may still require connectivity. Compare SIM and eSIM options and prepare the airport pickup separately.
