Small bowls of banh beo rice cakes with savory toppings

Hue’s small rice cakes and dumplings are a good reason to leave room between full meals. Banh beo, banh nam, banh bot loc and banh ram it offer different textures without requiring four large bowls of food.

If you already plan to try bun bo Hue, give these dishes their own stop. The interesting part is comparing a soft rice cake with a chewy dumpling or a bite that is crisp underneath.

Banh beo: a gentle starting point

Bánh bèo are steamed rice cakes served in small saucers. Savory toppings commonly include shrimp and crisp additions, with fish sauce alongside.

Our suggestion for a first order is to try one with very little sauce. Notice the soft base first, then season the next saucer to your liking. Ask how many bowls make up a serving, especially if the menu lists a tray rather than a single portion.

Banh nam: soft and wrapped in a leaf

Bánh nậm uses a thin layer of rice-flour paste and a savory shrimp filling, steamed inside a leaf parcel. It is softer than the translucent dumpling described below.

Open the wrapper on your plate and ask for a spoon if that makes it easier. The leaf holds the food; it is not something to eat. This is a useful choice for someone who prefers a delicate texture to a pronounced chew.

Banh bot loc: choose it for the chew

Bánh bột lọc has a translucent tapioca wrapper, commonly filled with shrimp and pork. Its elastic texture is a central part of the experience.

It may not be everyone’s favorite on the first bite. If you usually prefer crisp snacks, try a small order before asking for a second plate. That is more useful than choosing by appearance alone: two pale dumplings can feel very different when eaten.

Banh ram it: two textures together

Bánh ram ít combines a soft steamed rice component with a fried base. Toppings add further savory flavor.

For someone choosing only two dishes, our suggestion is banh beo and banh ram it. They give you a clearer contrast than ordering several soft rice cakes without knowing what separates them.

How to order without overdoing it

Ask whether a mixed plate is available and how many pieces it contains. If the shop only sells separate portions, choose two types first. You can order more after seeing the size and deciding what you enjoy.

Confirm what is included before the server leaves additional plates on your table. Small dishes can still become a substantial meal when you keep adding to the order.

Shrimp, pork and fish sauce appear across these foods. Do not judge the ingredients from the color of the wrapper, and ask about toppings and dips as well as the filling.

Make it a relaxed Hue food stop

Keep one unhurried break in your Hue sightseeing day. Check a shop’s current hours before walking over, and carry its Vietnamese name so it is easy to show someone nearby.

For navigation and menu translation, one option is 5G eSIM Vietnam | Viettel on Klook (affiliate link). Confirm phone compatibility and the selected package’s data and activation terms.
