A useful accommodation shortlist compares the same things across every property. Start with what your trip needs, then use photographs and ratings to investigate those needs rather than letting them define the decision.
Check location at street level
Measure the journey to your actual activities. A property described as central may still be far from your meeting point, station or preferred area. Ask about the final approach with luggage and whether vehicles can reach the entrance.
Read the room category carefully
Confirm bed size, number of beds, windows, bathroom arrangement and any extra-person charges. A hotel’s best promotional image may show a different category from the one you are booking. For families, confirm the actual sleeping arrangement rather than relying on a maximum occupancy figure.
Ask about conditions that affect sleep
Recent feedback about traffic, nightlife, construction and soundproofing is often more useful than old praise for decor. Ask the property about the specific room’s orientation. If you need step-free access, check the whole route from entrance to room, not just whether an elevator exists.
Compare the terms, not only the total
Read cancellation deadlines in the stated time zone, payment timing and what is included. Check whether taxes or deposits are handled separately. Save the version of the terms you accepted so that you can refer to the same information later.
For a longer or working stay
Confirm workspace, chair, laundry arrangements and internet performance directly. Ask how maintenance issues are reported and whether the room can be serviced around work calls. A cafe nearby is a useful extra, not a replacement for a room that supports your day.
