Start with Ho Chi Minh City, then choose either a river stay or a beach extension. Southern Vietnam can fill a week without trying to fit every island and delta stop into the same holiday. These ten tips help you choose useful overnight stops and avoid losing too many days to travel.

1. Give Ho Chi Minh City a gentle first day

Settle in before committing to a long excursion. A nearby meal and a short central walk are enough on arrival day. Save museum visits for a time when you can concentrate, and leave your first evening flexible if the flight or check-in takes longer than expected.

2. Choose your first hotel by daily journeys

Map two or three places you expect to visit, then compare hotels around that pattern. A room advertised as central can still mean inconvenient crossings or repeated rides. Confirm the entrance and vehicle pickup point with the property rather than relying only on a broad neighbourhood label.

3. Check the terminal for the exact flight

Do not use old advice that treats Tan Son Nhat’s domestic flights as a single-terminal operation. Vietnam Airlines announced its domestic move to T3 in May 2025. Check your operating airline and booking again before arranging the ride; that announcement does not describe every airline.

4. Decide what you want from the Mekong Delta

A brief organised day trip and a Can Tho overnight are different choices. For a quieter start to a river outing, consider sleeping near the departure area. Vietnam Tourism’s Can Tho guide helps you understand the river setting; confirm your own operator’s meeting point.

5. Ask what a river booking actually includes

Confirm the boat size, pickup arrangement, route and return point before paying. If breakfast or a market visit matters, ask specifically rather than interpreting a photograph as a promise. Leave time after the outing to shower and collect luggage instead of arranging an immediate onward departure.

6. Choose a precise beach address near Mui Ne

Look at the accommodation pin and the accessible stretch of shore before booking. A familiar destination name can cover a long coastal area. Ask where your bus or car will stop and whether you need another ride; that small detail matters when arriving with bags after dark.

7. Treat Phu Quoc as its own stay

If Phu Quoc is the priority, give it enough nights to justify the additional journey. Compare suitable flights and any ferry plan separately, using current operator information. Do not attach an island to the end of a short city visit without counting both travel days.

8. Build a flexible afternoon

Keep a museum, cafe or hotel break available when a long outdoor afternoon no longer appeals. A southern trip does not need constant movement to feel worthwhile. Put your most important outdoor activity in a flexible time slot and change the order when local conditions call for it.

9. Leave room for food beyond one organised tour

A tour can be a useful introduction, but keep another meal free to revisit something you liked. Order one manageable portion before adding more. Our Ho Chi Minh City food shortlist gives you dish names to save before you go.

10. Keep the return connection uncomplicated

Finish with a city night if your homeward flight is separate from an island or long-distance transfer. This also gives you time to repack and make any final purchases without a deadline hanging over the day. Reconfirm the airport pickup instead of assuming the arrival arrangement automatically applies in reverse.

Use our one-week routes to compare the night splits. Keep the final night near your departure point when a separate boat, road or flight connection would otherwise make the trip home fragile.
